Thesaurus.com offers 18 synonyms for the word engaged. Common terms include: betrothed, bound, intended, spoken for, and the oh-so-sixties phrase pinned. The only one that sounds remotely close to two men getting engaged is committed. But frankly, that sounds like we're about to be admitted to the psych ward. 'Hi there, we just got committed. Aren't these straight jackets fabulous? They're Prada. Padded is the new black.'

So every time I tell someone I recently got engaged, it seems a tad awkward. In fact, most people respond: 'I thought you were gay?' Yeah, fuckwad, haven't you heard of gay marriage?

It seems entirely reasonable to me that gay engagement should come before gay marriage. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find a word that adequately describes gay engagement. Until now.

Earlier tonight, my friend Anthony came up with a word that perfectly captures the sentiment:

Mangaged - the act of two gay men becoming engaged to be married (or committed, as the case may be, until America seems fit to allow us our freedoms)

I can even use it in a sentence: 'While we were vacationing in the islands, Michael and I got mangaged. Girl, our ceremony will be to-die.'
